From the corner office for June 27, 2021

From the corner office is Father Mike's weekly bulletin column...

“Do not be afraid; just have faith.” These words from Jesus to the parents of the little girl bridge us back to last week’s Gospel reading. We recall Jesus calming the storm as Jesus and the disciples crossed over to the other side. Here we have Jesus greeted by the synagogue official, Jairus, asking for Jesus to heal his daughter. What parent, would not go out on the limb to help their child? Think about it – Jairus, a synagogue official, was risking his livelihood and maybe even his life by asking Jesus for help. Jesus does go and help the little girl and the family. The statement from Jesus remains – “Do not be afraid; just have faith.”

The First Reading from Wisdom, tells how we are formed in God’s image, and that it is through the “…envy of the devil, death entered the world.” St. Paul echoes this theme of Christ joining us in our journey to be with us. BUT, the statement of the week remains, “Do not be afraid; just have faith.”

75th Anniversary thoughts:
Okay, at this point, I think we know each other enough to say – “Call me crazy!” But, just know, I’m not offended and actually, smirk when you say it. As the amount of “stuff happening” around the campus is (in verifiable, fact…) CRAZY! It is exciting to see and hear about each day.

Tuesday evening we celebrated the Feast Day of St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher, as they share the day. Honey Hut Ice Cream helped us out with the treats, and the volunteers helped with the set-up and clean-up. The beauty of the evening, was not only celebrating the Holy Mass together as a family, praying for each other (living and deceased), AND we shared a great evening of the ice cream social! The 75th Anniversary folks are really “out doing” themselves.

Here is where the ‘craziness’ comes in… I did a double-take walking back to the rectory at the end of the evening, as I looked up at the St. Thomas More statue, I felt him shaking his head with a broad smirk on his face! We’re having fun, we’re growing closer to God and each other! That’s a great thing, no matter how we look at it – thanks!

Summer dressing for Mass:
Okay, here is the “Fatherly talk…” People have asked, what is appropriate to wear? and can you say anything? My reply, usually (as I shake my head) is – Yes, well at least they are here… But, I’ll try my best.

We should dress for church in a manner of respect to our Lord and ourselves. If we are just “throwing on a t-shirt and shorts to make it to Mass,” it is worth slowing down and asking, could I turn to the next shirt and wear a polo with a collar? Would we find ourselves going out to a nice dinner, or even to work in shorts and a t-shirt? Out of respect to our Lord and ourselves, are we dressing for Mass in a way that shows us as having that respect for our Lord as present in both the Sacred Scripture and the Holy Eucharist?

When we decide what to wear, is it a reflection of our view of ourselves, or (again) are we just dressing to get by and done? SOoooo, there, I mentioned it and now leave it up to you to decide, but I hope these few questions when picking out next week’s “Sunday’s Best” will help a bit.
