From the corner office is Father Mike's weekly bulletin...

The First Reading this week continues to show us how God wants to be part of our lives. You recall last week how God showed Abram the stars of the sky, showing him how his decedents would grow. This week Moses is with God near the burning bush on sacred ground. St. Paul calls on the Corinthians to repent, as we are all called to repent. Jesus, in the Gospel of Luke, gives hard examples of others, before finally speaking of the persistent gardener asking for another year from the orchard owner to help this fig tree. The gardener asks for time to fertilize and groom the tree so that it can be fruitful. The action of repentance needs to be from the mind, while in the heart, so that there is finally action – the fruitfulness. So, are we willing to be fruitful in our lives?

From the Pastor’s Desk:

The readings this week are very helpful for us in looking how best to move into our next 75-years. The parish of St. Thomas More, in church years, is really only an infant. I look at other parishes around our diocese and see parishes well over 150-years old. This past week I spoke with another pastor about their parish and facilities, and how they are dealing with building-pains of church and school buildings turning 100-years old. The maintenance, we both agreed on, is a major project. But this wise pastor did remind me that the parish is more the people than just the buildings or campus.

So too, the change of culture for the parish needs to be a change that starts in the mind, then moves through the heart, and finally outward into action. Just like the readings this week, the call to repentance is a call for action, from the mind through the heart… We can’t use the phrase, “…this is how we always did it.” That’s a nice phrase, but we need to look for a better approach so that we can move forward.
