Habemus Papem - We have a pope!

Just after 12 p.m. (EDT), white smoke poured from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel accompanied by roars from the thousands gathered. Soon after, the bells in St. Peter's Square rang out announcing to the world that a new pope had been selected. About an hour later, the world met Pope Leo XIV (formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost) a native of Chicago and the first pope born in the United States.

The Diocese of Cleveland has created a web page collecting articles and videos from the day. Bishop Edward Malesic released a statement that began, "I rejoice with the rest of the world at the announcement that the next successor of St. Peter has been named by the College of Cardinals under the guidance of the Holy Spirit." Read Bishop's entire statement, view additional articles and more at dioceseofcleveland.org/popeleo.
