From the corner office for August 1, 2021

From the Corner Office is Father Mike's weekly bulletin column...

This week, we continue the talk of food, bread from heaven, and “being filled”. The First Reading from Exodus concerns the community who grumbled against Moses and Aaron, which is a comfort to me as it keeps me humbled in hearing that things never change. The concern from the people is the request to be fed, the quest for more from heaven. Even in the Gospel reading from St. John, the crowd is asking for more, that they ask Jesus, “…give us this bread always.” The people are hungry for the bread of life. This is the Holy Eucharist. Our question to ask: are we hungry for this Bread of Life? Do we ever keep thinking, that there has to be more to life than this…?

Yes, there is! There is the glory of God and ultimately heaven! We are good to keep asking these questions, and as St. Paul encourages us, “[to]…put away the old self or your former ways of life … and put on the new self.” We as a parish have been, are, and will continue to do this together! We’re celebrating these past 75-years, and will continue into the future. May we all continue to “never be full, but continue to grow closer to God!”

75th Anniversary thoughts:
“What’s the big deal about “one letter”? A very good question, I thought growing up as a school kid. Naturally, dad has all the answers, and often a way to explain it with a twist… “Well, there is a h*ll of a lot of difference between even just one letter, such as a D and a C in your grades…” (And thus, a greater understanding was started concerning the letter D…

So, how about the D in fundraising and fun-raising, still that darn letter D. But that is what I want you all to better understand, the difference of that same letter D. The 75th Anniversary events are meant to be FUN-raising events, which is we all have fun! The FunDraising events will be coming, especially when the Diocese sees all the FUN we are having, (but that’s another day). Thank you to all the committees, the volunteers, and you for this weekend’s celebration. There will be a nominal charge for the food and drinks, but this is only to help with the rising food costs. The FUN will not be short changed. The Bishop mentioned a few times during his visit, thank you for 75-years as a parish here in Brooklyn, and bringing Christ to others. This is what we will always continue to do, as a parish, and well into the future – as we will continue to have FUN!
