From the corner office for June 26, 2022

From the corner office is Father Mike's weekly bulletin column.

The Thirteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time is upon us, and we may ask, how did we get to the Thirteenth Sunday already? Well there were a few feast days that we celebrated on the past few Sundays which helped us along the way. Now with the use of the title “Ordinary” we remember that is anything but “ordinary”. We need to look at this time as a time of ‘ordering our lives.”

All three passages this week speak of ordering or focusing our lives to God. Elisha is falling into helping Elijah the prophet in the First Reading from the First Book of Kings. St. Paul in his letter, is encouraging the Galatians to live in The Spirit and to “…love your neighbor as yourself.” Even Jesus, realizing the mission towards Jerusalem, is stern in those who say that they want to follow him, but only after they take care of a few things. Jesus is direct with these folks and challenges them to drop things and “keep up with him” as he is on a mission! “On a mission from God!” ~ What’s your mission?

From the Pastor’s Desk:

This past week we celebrated the Feast of St. Thomas More on Wednesday with a special Mass and ice cream social. (Naturally…) We thank all of our helper bees and benefactors who made the celebration so special.

We also took time to start out this year, as a year of the Holy Spirit for the parish and school. We ask for the special guidance and wisdom from the Holy Spirit for how each of us are called to serve our community, parish, and family. Just as St. Paul is asking the Galatians to …love your neighbor…, and how Jesus is being direct as he is on his mission – we too need to discern our own mission. Let us all take time to pray over and ask how we might be called to serve. Sr. Jane has been writing her bulletin pieces on the documents of Vatican II, and our call as faithful laity. How are we called? And for what are we called? I often think of those two line from the 1980’s movie The Blues Brothers, “…We’re on a mission from God!” and then “Hit it!”
