From the corner office for Jan. 22, 2023

From the corner office is Father Mike's weekly bulletin column.

We are starting to gain more traction now that we are moving into Ordinary Time with this being the Third Sunday already. We have this week the Gospel of Matthew repeating the passage from the Book of Isaiah in the First Reading concerning the people coming out of their darkness and seeing the great light. Jesus fulfills this passage from Isaiah, as Jesus is the great light. Yes, St. Paul is working to bring back together the Church of Corinth similar to our working to bringing together our families. We need to be the one to point others to the great light of Jesus. Remember how last week we discussed pointing others to Christ Jesus like St. John the Baptist? Let’s continue this week to point others to the Great Light, Jesus Christ!

From the Pastor’s Desk:

It seems that since the holidays that we did not take much of a break from dealing with the continual hospice calls and funerals. I would have to say a “special thank you” to all the ministers of the funeral liturgies and the grieving ministers. The families have been very appreciative, and I know that the prayers of support are helpful. There was even one funeral when the call went out for “extras” to help fill the pews so that the family did not seem to be so alone. Thank you for those prayer-extras who helped fill the pews.

The continue stream of funerals will be bringing more challenges for us as a parish… We’ll need to talk about encouraging new parishioners, and also the (very) necessary help of legacy giving, which is a major support to the parish. Over the next few months we will talk more about the topics of stewardship and support, even in these times of funerals. The parish continues through the generosity of our benefactors. My prayer is for all of us to be open to talking and discerning more about how we can all best support the parish of St. Thomas More.
