From the corner office for July 2, 2023

From the Corner Office is Father Mike’s weekly bulletin column.

Think of the usage of the term “oxymoron,” the simple phrase that presents one – then another. The phrases “crash landing”, “controlled chaos”, “exact estimate”, and (my favorite) jumbo shrimp… Two words or phrases that mean different things, but come together for one usage.

NOW, in the Second Reading, think of St. Paul’s talk about “baptized into his death” and “died with Christ…live with him.” Then we have Jesus pointing out in St. Matthew’s Gospel passage of “…whoever finds his life will lose it…” and “…whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” This week, we see the differences of the worldly life, and the heavenly life – that life of God’s glory, forever. Jesus doesn’t want to confuse us by any means, but rather that we see the difference and live for God!

From the Pastor’s Desk:

This week leads us into the Fourth of July weekend. We may be visiting friends and picnicking, or simply relaxing alone these days. We see that we are now starting the second half of the summer months, and it is time to think as we relax. We need to think about those who have helped us get to where we are, as a nation – good or bad. We need to start thinking, and educating ourselves on how we need to exercise our hard-earned freedoms. Yes, we can be talking about being a “well informed voter”, as well as being one who encourages others to be sure to exercise their freedoms. It will be a crazy political season, but let us start the discussions while helping others to better understand the issues upon us.

Happy Fourth of July!
